He had stolen phones but forgot his.

More than two years after the facts, a 28-year-old man was extracted Thursday from his cell at the Seysses remand center, near Toulouse, and placed in police custody to answer for a rather incredible burglary.

The break-in dates back to a night in December 2018 in a house in the Toulouse district of Fer-à-Cheval.

The occupant of the premises, a lady in her sixties, had been woken up by noises at 4.30 am.

In fact, it was the footsteps of an intruder that she caught at her bedroom door guiding herself by the light of her smartphone.

DNA "matches"

Surprised by the awakening of his victim, the man fled, carrying a whole bunch of electronic equipment and bank cards, but dropping his own phone.

And, as he apparently continued his "activities", DNA eventually "matched", his recent incarceration making him much less elusive.

From a police source, the suspect denied the facts while in police custody, pleading that his cell phone had been stolen at the time of the robbery.

He was still referred to the prosecution this Friday morning, for an immediate appearance before the criminal court.
