- We have had covid patients all the time, but at a slower pace.

Now that there has been such a sharp increase, IVA has an incredibly high pressure and we also have a high pressure here.

Sometimes all the devices are busy because we have so many seriously ill, says Anna Hedman, nurse at the infection ward at Falu hospital.

The places at Falu Hospital are almost gone

The Dalarna region has a strained situation as there is a sharp increase in the number of people with corona who need medical care.

The seats are almost insufficient and more corona seats are opened.

The region has received help from other regions and sent patients to other hospitals for coronary care.

The Dalarna region has also requested four more respirators from the National Board of Health and Welfare in order to be able to care for all corona patients.

- The difference now compared to a year ago is that we see significantly younger patients who need covid care, says Anna Hedman.

Due to the strained situation, Region Dalarna can activate the crisis agreement for nurses and assistant nurses in intensive care units in Mora and Falun, which means that staff may have to work longer shifts and more hours.

"Never seen anything like it in 30 years"

- The situation today is safer when it comes to how to care for corona patients.

Likewise, all my colleagues have been vaccinated at IVA, so the feeling of insecurity about becoming infected yourself is lower, says Ralf Melander, a nurse in the intensive care unit at Falu Hospital.

You have worked for 30 years in intensive care.

Have you experienced anything like this?

- Never, no, no.

Sure, it can be tough.

Intensive care can change in just an hour, but having so much to do during such a long time I have never experienced in my 30 years in the same department.
