Brussels / Berlin (dpa) - The environmental foundation WWF has criticized Germany for a slow implementation of EU plans for marine protection.

Although there has been a so-called plan for maritime spatial planning since 2009, Germany has failed to adapt the plan to EU requirements from 2014, said the conservationists.

The deadline for implementation expired on Wednesday.

Germany's modified plan is not due to be adopted until later this year.

Overall, two thirds of the EU countries with coast missed this deadline, criticized the WWF.

Six of the 22 countries concerned, whose plans were updated in good time - including Belgium, the Netherlands and Portugal - had major gaps in their plans.
