Mainz (dpa / lrs) - Despite the increasing number of infections, municipalities and districts in Rhineland-Palatinate can apply as a model region for cautious opening steps in lockdown.

"An application deadline was not set," said Prime Minister Malu Dreyer (SPD) on Maundy Thursday.

Rather, it is a matter of calmly developing coherent concepts in model municipalities.

It does not necessarily have to start next week or in the week after: "The municipalities want enough time to work out exactly those concepts on site and to set up the scientific support."

A decisive criterion for the success of the application is a stable incidence below 50.

The first three applications have already been received - from whom, the State Chancellery does not say.

According to dpa information, it is Kaiserslautern, Landau and Zweibrücken.

Neuwied, Mainz and Koblenz, among others, had already expressed public interest.

"I'm pleased about the great interest in the country and the first applications," said Dreyer.

"Even if interested municipalities are currently above the seven-day incidence of 50, they can already work on their concepts and submit their ideas."

It remains important to develop alternatives to lockdown.

The own region has the chance to keep its infection numbers constantly low or to get them back down and at the same time to develop ways back to normality.

The applications received are checked by a team from the State Chancellery, the Ministry of Health, the Ministry of the Interior and the Development Agency.

In addition to the incidence, one of the criteria is that the municipalities procure sufficient rapid and self-tests.

An alliance and financial participation of retailers, outdoor restaurants, theaters or fitness studios is possible.

"Even if the number of infections is currently far too high: The work on the model municipalities also offers an incentive," emphasized Dreyer.

"Individual districts and cities have always managed to drastically reduce the number of infections together with their citizens."
