The Suez Canal Authority has announced that it will claim 1 billion dollars (about 1.1 trillion won) in compensation for the grounding of the'Ever Given'.

According to a Reuters and Bloomberg news agency on the 1st local time, Osama Ravi, the Commissioner of the Suez Canal Administration (CSA), appeared on a local TV on the day and said, "This incident has damaged Egypt's reputation, so we deserve compensation."

Director Ravi added, "The amount of compensation is an estimate that takes into account transportation charges, canal damage due to dredging and salvage operations, and equipment and labor costs."

However, Bloomberg reported that Director Ravi did not say where he would claim compensation.

'Evergreen' of Taiwan, the shipping company of the wrecked ship, insisted at a press conference that "we will rarely be asked to pay compensation."

Bloomberg said that Japan's Shoei Kisen, the shipowner (ship owner) of the Evergiven, and Suez Canal Management Office are discussing the issue of compensation.

The Panamanian Evergiven, which had previously departed from China and headed for Rotterdam, the Netherlands, was stranded in the middle of the Suez Canal on the 23rd of last month, and the passage of the canal was paralyzed.

The Evergiven is a large ship with a length of 400m and 224,000 tons.

It is known that about 422 ships were waiting to pass through the Suez Canal when the Evergiven was aground.
