Alt Tellin (dpa) - The cause of the major fire in the huge pig breeding facility Alt Tellin (Western Pomerania-Greifswald) is still unclear.

As a police spokesman said on Thursday, the investigations by the fire investigator and the criminal police are still ongoing.

It is not yet possible to estimate when a result can be expected.

After two days, the fire, in which the barn with tens of thousands of piglets and sows was destroyed, was now completely extinguished.

The police have already released parts of the fire ruins that the fire expert had already visited for clearance.

According to the Ministry of Agriculture, tens of thousands of piglets and sows were probably killed in the fire.

The operators have commissioned a security service to guard the site.

This should also keep onlookers away.

The piglet rearing facility belongs to the Agricultural Piglet Breeding Germany (LFD) Holding (Roßdorf).

A spokesman for the LFD did not want to give any information about the possible amount of damage.

With a capacity of around 10,000 sows and 50,000 piglets, the piglet rearing facility was one of the largest in Germany.

The carcasses are under the collapsed stables and must be disposed of, the district said.

According to his information, only about 1500 animals could be saved.

According to its own information, the LFD operates eleven pig breeding facilities, mainly in eastern Germany.
