Hanover / Bremen (dpa / lni) - You can get through any traffic jam, no matter how long - the Johanniter Unfallhilfe motorcycle relay.

Between the Easter and autumn holidays, the volunteers work on the highways in Lower Saxony and Bremen.

This year's season should start quietly because of the corona-related lockdown, said the Johanniter.

Little traffic is expected on the streets at Easter.

"But if the worst comes to the worst, we are prepared," said Thorsten Renken, regional coordinator of the motorcycle relay and stowage aid in the Lower Saxony / Bremen regional association.

Accidents and long traffic jams tend to be more frequent during vacation periods.

If the way for rescue workers to the scene of the accident is made difficult by the lack of emergency lanes, the traffic jam assistants on their agile machines are in demand.

They secure accident sites or breakdowns and provide first aid until the rescue service arrives.

In Lower Saxony and Bremen, around 70 traffic jam helpers are organized in seven squadrons: Ahlhorn, Aller-Leine, Bremen-Verden, Hildesheim, Northeim, Salzgitter and Hanover.

Last year they did almost 3000 hours of voluntary work in 746 missions.

The use of the traffic jam helpers is free of charge for the people being cared for, for the municipalities and for the police, as it was also said.

The equipment of the drivers, the technical and medical material as well as the maintenance and fuel of the motorcycles are financed by donations - among others by the ADAC.
