At the end of the 1950s, Hamburg became one of the most important travel destinations for the composer Igor Stravinsky (1882-1971), who came from Russia and emigrated to the USA in 1940.

At the time, Stravinsky worked intensively with the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra, which was then still called the NDR Symphony Orchestra - in Hamburg concert halls and on a joint tour to Switzerland and Venice.

On the occasion of the 50th anniversary of his death on April 6th, the NDR is honoring the composer with an online festival that includes five live streams and four radio concerts.

At the beginning on April 6th, the NDR Choir under the direction of Philipp Ahmann Stravinsky's “Three Sacred Choirs” will precede the “Motets for Mixed Choir and Basso Continuo” by Claudio Monteverdi.

In the further course the choir spans the range from “Tres sacrae cantiones” by Carlo Gesualdo di Venos / Igor Stravinsky to a selection of di Venosa's “Responsories for Holy Week”.

The concert will be broadcast as a live video stream from the Elbphilharmonie at 8 p.m.

The second concert in the series will be played by the Koroliov piano duo on April 8th in the Rolf Liebermann Studio under the title “Stravinsky on 176 Keys”.

Evgeni Koroliov and Ljupka Hadzigeorgieva frame György Kurtág's “Hommage à Stravinsky from“ Játékok ”with the honored concerto for two pianos (2nd movement) and the sonata for two pianos.

Finally, “Le Sacre du printemps” will be heard in the version for piano four hands.

The NDR Radiophilharmonie dedicates the third evening in Hanover to “Stravinsky in C and D”.

Stravinsky's “Symphonies of Wind Instruments”, the “Violin Concerto in D” and the “Symphony in C” will be performed under the direction of Andrew Manze.

Julian Rachlin takes on the part on the solo violin.

Alan Gilbert sounds “The Firebird” in the Elbphilharmonie

Alan Gilbert and the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchester, with the active support of Kirill Gerstein on the piano, will organize a live stream on Saturday evening, April 10th, with the “Concerto for Piano and Wind Instruments”.

In addition, "Apollon musagète", which Stravinksy once conducted himself at NDR, and "The Firebird - Suite for Orchestra" will be heard without the soloist.

The concert starts at 8 p.m.

At the end of the series, the NDR big band “Windows to Stravinsky” contributes a live stream on Sunday, April 11th from 9pm from the Elbphfilharmonie.

"About Stravinsky - From My Point of View" will be performed under the direction of the composer Geir Lysne.

The concerts can be heard on www.ndr.de/strawinskyfestival (where rare film material about Stravinsky is also available), the NDR EO app and live on the radio on NDR Kultur.

Only the piano duo concert is not played on the radio.
