It was in central Söderhamn that a man in his 50s was severely beaten on Thursday.
The police do not currently know what caused the assault that took place outdoors.
The man was taken by ambulance to hospital and has not yet been questioned by police.
A preliminary investigation into aggravated assault has been initiated.
