Tübingen / Calw (dpa) - The Tübingen public prosecutor has started investigations against its commander, Brigadier General Markus Kreitmayr, in the course of the ammunition affair at the Special Forces Command (KSK) of the Bundeswehr.

The Chief Public Prosecutor Matthias Grundke said on Thursday the suspicion of a violation of Section 40 of the Military Penal Act is being examined.

This is comparable to the criminal offense of the distribution of punishments.

The reason for the investigation are media reports on a collection campaign for ammunition at the KSK headquarters in Calw.

Several media had previously reported on the investigation.

Kreitmayr is considered innocent until the proceedings have been legally concluded.

So far, he has only commented on the matter internally, but not publicly.

It was still an initial suspicion, said Grundke.

There is currently no investigation against other people, but it cannot be ruled out that the investigation will be expanded.

In the course of preliminary investigations by the Bundeswehr in this matter, the Tübingen public prosecutor's office had already been provided with documents.

It had previously been announced that there should have been a collection campaign for ammunition at the KSK site in Calw in the spring of 2021, in which soldiers could return ammunition with impunity that had previously been stolen or not returned after target practice.

The action is said to have been ordered by KSK commander Kreitmayr.

Defense Minister Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer (CDU) had already initiated disciplinary preliminary investigations against KSK commander Kreitmayr in the course of the ammunition affair.
