Magdeburg (dpa / sa) - Last year evaded taxes with a total volume of more than 25.2 million euros were uncovered in Saxony-Anhalt.

That was significantly less than in previous years, said the Ministry of Finance in Magdeburg when asked.

In 2019 there were still evaded taxes totaling a good 73.5 million euros, in 2018 around 75.2 million euros.

The cause of the decline cannot yet be named, a detailed analysis of the fresh figures is necessary, said a ministry spokeswoman.

The cases settled in 2020 mainly came from criminal proceedings initiated in previous years, it said.

Very few criminal proceedings initiated in the 2020 calendar year were concluded in the same year.

On average, criminal proceedings take around three and a half years from initiation to conclusion.

A total of 322 searches were completed last year.

For 2019, the ministry had specified around 300 exams.

The number of voluntary disclosures continued to decline to 46 in 2020, 53 in 2019 and 67 in the previous year.

How much more taxes were collected due to the voluntary disclosures is not statistically recorded separately, it said.
