Wiesbaden (dpa) - Private households in Germany benefited from the temporary reduction in VAT in the second half of 2020 in terms of electricity prices.

According to calculations by the Federal Statistical Office, electricity became cheaper by 2.4 percent compared to the first six months of last year.

On average, private households paid 31.16 cents per kilowatt hour in the second half of the year, as the Wiesbaden authority announced on Thursday.

In order to stimulate the economy, the federal government lowered the VAT rates from July 1 to the end of 2020.

Natural gas, on the other hand, became more expensive for private consumers.

An average of 6.12 cents per kilowatt hour was 2.2 percent more than in the first six months of last year.

The temporary VAT cut also had a price-reducing effect on gas prices.

However, because consumption is usually lower in the second half of a year, but the basic price for natural gas remains the same, this ensures an increase in the average price per kilowatt hour, explained the Federal Office.

Depending on consumption, there would be very different prices for households anyway - for both gas and electricity.
