Every evening, Brazilian viewers discover, dumbfounded, the results of Covid-19 at the time of information.

On Wednesday, the death toll hit another record: 3,869 in 24 hours, reports

our correspondent in Sao Paulo

.

The month of March was particularly deadly, with more than 66,500 victims, 102% more than the 32,881 dead last July in this country of 212 million inhabitants.

And there is no indication that April will not be even worse.

The pandemic appears to be out of control

.

The number of confirmed cases is also skyrocketing and hospitals are completely saturated.

The week of March 21 to 27 was the one with the most contaminations recorded (nearly 540,000), which augurs new records for the influx of intensive care patients and deaths in two weeks.

Doctors are suggesting viewers not to celebrate Easter with their families and begging young people not to celebrate.

The Amazon variant, they say, is much more aggressive and the population under 50 is much more affected than at the start of the pandemic.

Conflicting messages

In several states, healthcare workers have already started allocating intensive care beds to those patients who are most likely to survive.

At least 230 confirmed or suspected coronavirus patients died in March for lack of finding a bed in intensive care in the conurbation of Sao Paulo, capital of the richest state in the country, according to TV Globo.

Also involved is the lack of coordination in the fight against the pandemic across the country, with often contradictory messages.

On the one hand, local elected officials who decree confinements and on the other President Bolsonaro who declared on the contrary on Wednesday that "

it is not by staying at home that we will solve the problem

".

In just over a year,

the Covid-19 has killed 321,515 in Brazil.

A record only surpassed by the United States.
