Cologne (dpa) - In an open letter to the Roman Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, the five large Catholic women's associations in German-speaking countries have called for the ban on blessings for homosexual couples to be lifted.

The associations, which together number one million members, call for a renewal of the sexual and relationship ethics of the Catholic Church.

The Austrian Catholic Women's Movement (kfbö), the Swiss Catholic Women's Association (SKF), the Catholic Women's Community of Germany (kfd), the Catholic German Women's Association (KDFB) and the Catholic Women's Movement South Tyrol (kfb) are involved.

The task of the church is to make God's love visible in the world, and that also means to turn against homophobia, write the associations in the letter published on Thursday.

"God's love is promised to all people, regardless of their sexual orientation."

Sex is part of creation.

Responsible sexual love relationships cannot be reduced to marriage.

The Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith - the supreme guardian of Catholic teaching - announced last month that it was “objectively” not God's will for homosexual couples to be blessed.
