Frankfurt / Main (dpa) - A Bundesliga statistic was drastically influenced by the consequences of the corona pandemic: the audience numbers.

If there was never a ghost game in Germany's top division before the crisis began, these have been standard for months in the 2020/21 season.

How else has Corona changed the Bundesliga?

The Institute for Match Analysis in Potsdam has researched this and looked at goals, home wins, opportunities and other statistical details, among other things.

Three time periods were examined: the “normal” part of the 2019/2020 season, game days 1 to 25 up to the Corona break.

The second part of the season with game days 26 and 34 as well as the current season 2020/21.

WHAT ABOUT THE HOME ADVANTAGE: The restart phase from mid-May to the end of June 2020 formed a trend that has not been confirmed.

During this period there were 44 percent away wins and only 32 percent successes for the home teams.

If you look at the statistics before and since Corona, the yield of the guests has clearly improved: If there were significantly more home wins (97:79) in the period before the pandemic, the ratio has been more or less balanced since the resumption (117: 115) .

There were 64 draws in the current season, so the value of the previous season (68) is almost set.

DEVELOPMENT OF THE NET PLAYING TIME: When the ghost game operation began, it was initially said that word battles and discussions could become fewer and shorter without a loud audience.

With regard to the net playing time in the Bundesliga, these theories have either not been confirmed - or have not had a major impact.

From 55:36 minutes (phase one with fans) to 55:42 minutes (phase two entirely without fans) to 56:24 minutes (phase three partially with fans) the differences were only marginal.

GOAL DISTRIBUTION: The restart 2019/20 with nine match days is an exception here.

In this phase, 53 percent of the goals (134: 117) fell for away teams, in the other two phases there were 51 more goals for the home teams.

This corresponds to a share of 53 percent (2019/20 season) and 54 percent (2020/21 season).

FLOOD OF PENALTIES: Since the pandemic-related forced break, there has been a significant increase in penalties.

In the current season, 88 penalties have already been whistled: After 26 of 34 match days, that is more than in the entire previous season.

The distribution is also striking: While there were even more penalties for away teams (41) than home teams (33) in 2019/2020, this trend has now reversed.

Home teams (48) have so far been allowed to start from the point clearly more often than guests (40).
