There are other twists and turns in the chaos surrounding the AstraZeneca corona vaccine: Anyone who has initially only received one vaccine with the AstraZeneca vaccine and is younger than 60 should receive a drug like that from Pfizer / Biontech or Moderna for the second.

This has now been announced by the Standing Vaccination Commission (Stiko) in a revised recommendation.

There is still no scientific knowledge about vaccinations with different means.

However, “a dose of an mRNA vaccine 12 weeks after the first vaccination” is recommended until data are available.

This class of vaccines includes those from Pfizer / BioNTech and Moderna.

Meanwhile, ZDF reports that the Federal Chancellery knew long before Tuesday's decision to stop vaccinating AstraZeneca on people under 60 that a suspension would be inevitable.

A Stiko spokesman confirmed to the broadcaster that Merkel had already been informed of the new findings on Friday by the head of the expert group, Thomas Mertens.

Accordingly, it was reported to Merkel that there would have to be a stop for certain age groups "in all probability", since 31 cases of sinus vein thrombosis had occurred.

Nine people died from it.

Initially, however, the Chancellery consulted other experts.

A government spokeswoman told ZDF: "In view of the national scope of the decision, the Chancellor asked for the expertise of the Ethics Council and the National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina to be consulted."

Even when she appeared on TV on “Anne Will” on Sunday evening, Merkel did not mention the worrying new findings.

Instead, she promised that there would be “a vaccination offer for over 50 million people at the end of the second quarter”.

Since the Stiko informed the Chancellery of the concerns on Friday, according to the RKI, over 300,000 more people have received a dose of the vaccine.
