Outbreaks of bird flu have been reported in the counties of Östergötland, Skåne, Halland, Kalmar and Västra Götaland.

Marie Lönneskog Hogstadius, operations manager at Swedish Eggs, says that this has led to approximately 1.5 million laying hens and around 700,000 young hens having been killed due to the outbreaks.

- Which makes us a little worried going forward because the young hens will fill the stables when it becomes empty after a round of hens.

No egg shortage at Easter

This weekend is Easter, a holiday that is strongly associated with eggs.

Due to several large outbreaks of bird flu around the country, there have been concerns about whether there will be a shortage of eggs when it is time to shop before the holiday.

According to Marie Lönneskog Hogstadius, there is no risk of egg shortages this weekend.

However, people are worried about egg production in the future.

- It will probably take the whole of this year before we are back in normal production, she says.
