March 31, 2021 The call for the selection of astronauts and astronauts ESA 2021 was opened today. It is the first competition in more than ten years, the fourth since 1978. The new "recruits" will work alongside the existing ESA astronauts as Europe enters a new era of space exploration.

Handbook

Becoming an astronaut is not an easy task and is an ever-changing role that requires extensive ability to adapt to the new challenges posed by exploration away from home.

The ESA team is made up of diverse people from a wide range of cultural, personal and professional backgrounds.

Rather than excelling in any area, it is very important for astronauts to be good team players and demonstrate skills in multiple fields and disciplines.

The hardest thing?

"Apply", writes ESA on the site.

"There is perhaps one person in a thousand who will be chosen, but there is one in a million who will stand as a candidate. So do it!"

Parastronauts

ESA has also launched a competition for the 'Parastronaut' feasibility study, during which

astronauts and astronauts with specific physical disabilities

will be selected

.

This project is a world first, which intends to break down barriers for people living with physical disabilities and allow them to carry out a professional space mission.

"Representing all parts of our society is a commitment that we take very seriously," said David Parker, Director of Human Exploration and Robotics at ESA.

"Diversity in ESA must not only refer to the origin, age, background or gender of our astronauts, but also to possible physical disabilities. To make this dream a reality, together with the recruitment of astronauts and astronauts, I am launching the Parastronaut Feasibility Project (parastronaut feasibility project), an innovation that it is time to introduce ".

"We didn't evolve to go into space, so when it comes to space travel, we're all disabled," said astronaut Samantha Cristoforetti.

"What matters is only the technology. This is a feasibility study and examine exactly what is needed, what it will cost, but that's the goal."

Here the form to apply:

Parastronaut

have until May 28

Both Competitions will remain open from March 31 to May 28, 2021 and ESA will only consider applications sent through the ESA Career web page during these eight weeks.

After this date, a six-step selection process will begin.

Candidates and candidates who pass the selection will presumably be nominated in October 2022.
