Barsinghausen (dpa) - The football season for amateurs in Lower Saxony has ended because of the coronavirus pandemic.

The board of the Lower Saxony Football Association (NFV) agreed in a video meeting on Wednesday evening to end and cancel the 2020/21 season, which has been interrupted since the beginning of November 2020 due to corona, with immediate effect.

The decision affects all age groups and gaming groups at district, district and association level, as announced by the NFV.

In the leagues for which the association in Lower Saxony is solely responsible, there will be no promotions and relegations.

Regarding a possible continuation of the season in the Regionalliga Nord, no decision has yet been made.

"We made our decision with a heavy heart," said NFV President Günter Distelrath.

"Due to the state's disposition, which initially extended the lockdown to April 18, as well as the prospective political statements, we consider the timely start of unrestricted team training and match operations to be no longer realistic."

Regarding the cup competitions, Distelrath says: “The participants in the DFB Cup should, if available, be determined in a sporting manner.

Otherwise, an alternative decision-making can also be considered here.

The same applies to the trophy at district and district level. "
