Halle (dpa / sa) - At the university in Halle, the go-ahead for a project to distribute drugs via drone was given on Wednesday.

In the presence of Prime Minister Reiner Haseloff (CDU), the idea generators and developers demonstrated a flight test with a drug-equipped drone on the Weinberg Campus.

With the project on the so-called pharmacy drone app supported by the University of Halle, the initiators want to test a drug distribution system using drones under real conditions.

The aim of the project is to ensure the quality of life of the elderly and people in need of care, announced the university.

Patients with restricted mobility or living in rural regions would be the focus of attention.

During the project period of two years, the system consisting of receipt of prescriptions, goods distribution and delivery via drone should be brought to market maturity, said one of the developers.

When delivering via drone, the medication should be lowered to the recipient via a winch.

Landing the drone might be too cumbersome, said one of the initiators.

The prototype of the drone therefore has to be modified in some places.

As a safety element, the drone has a small parachute.

The initiator of the project is a pharmacist from Dessau.

Research on the project is now to be carried out together with software developers and drone manufacturers.

For this, the group received funding from the Federal Ministry of Education of around 680,000 euros.
