Papenburg (dpa) - The German cruise ship builder Meyer-Werft landed a new construction contract from Japan in the middle of the Corona crisis.

The major shipping company NYK Group is ordering a luxury ship for 744 passengers, which should be delivered in 2025, announced the company in Papenburg an der Ems on Wednesday.

No information was given on the purchase price.

NYK becomes a customer of Meyer-Werft for the first time.

With a length of 229 meters and a weight of 52,000 tons, the ship is rather small, the shipyard capacities are still underutilized, it said.

Nevertheless, the shipyard spoke of an "important signal".

According to her, it is the world's first order for a new cruise ship that was awarded during the corona pandemic.

When the industry is at a standstill, there is virtually no demand for new ships.

Meyer-Werft has slowed down its construction program and, according to its own information, must save 1.25 billion euros.

Negotiations are being made with the employee side about job cuts.

Including the order from Japan, Meyer-Werft has ten firm orders.
