Halle (dpa / sa) - Transport Minister Andreas Scheuer (CSU), Prime Minister Reiner Haseloff (CDU) and Deutsche Bahn manager Ronald Pofalla symbolically put the Halle rail node into operation with a small ceremony at Halle main station on Wednesday.

Although the station has been in operation since January after many years of modernization work, there has not yet been a ceremony due to the corona pandemic.

"Here in Halle we have created the most modern railway infrastructure in Germany for our customers," said DB Infrastructure Director Ronald Pofalla.

Leipzig, Berlin and Erfurt moved closer to the S-Bahn distance.

The renovation work is a step towards the climate change.

Federal Transport Minister Andreas Scheuer (CSU) described the node as “a masterpiece of rail” that everyone who gets on, off and transferred there could be happy about.

Prime Minister Haseloff (CDU) stated that the commissioning 30 years after reunification was an important step for the transport connection of Saxony-Anhalt and a building block for good economic development.

According to Deutsche Bahn, over 800 million euros and around six and a half years of construction were invested in modernizing the infrastructure.

So new tracks, platforms and electronic signal boxes were created.

Shops, service and gastronomy were renewed.

According to the company, Halle main station is one of 16 “future stations” in Germany.

Service ideas are tested here.

For example, two automated bicycle parking towers offer secure parking spaces for two-wheelers.

A bicycle station offers repair options.
