Alt Tellin (dpa / mv) - One day after the major fire in a huge pig breeding facility in Alt Tellin (Western Pomerania-Greifswald), the cause of the fire is still unclear.

As a police spokesman said on Wednesday morning, the almost completely destroyed facility has been confiscated and closed for investigations.

A fire expert is supposed to examine the premises of the Landwirtschaftliche Ferkelzucht Deutschland (LFD) Holding.

It was one of the largest piglet rearing facilities in Germany, in which, according to the Schwerin Ministry of Agriculture, there were around 50,000 piglets and 9,000 sows.

According to the district, only 1,500 animals were rescued.

The fire broke out on Tuesday morning and almost destroyed the entire stables.

The controversial company was built in 2011 for around 20 million euros.

Experts estimate the damage caused by the fire at several million euros.

A company spokesman said there is still no clear record of how many animals have been rescued.

The incident will be "transparently monitored."

The LFD operates eleven pig breeding facilities in several federal states.

On Wednesday morning, firefighters extinguished embers and kept fire watch.

About 75 comrades were able to prevent the fire from spreading to a biogas plant and feed silos on Tuesday.
