Halle / Erfurt (dpa / th) - Despite the ongoing Corona crisis, the spring, which is typical of the season, has brought a slight relaxation to the Thuringian labor market.

69,600 women and men were unemployed in Thuringia in March, 2100 fewer than in February, as the regional directorate of the Federal Employment Agency announced on Wednesday.

The unemployment rate thus fell by 0.1 points compared to the previous month to 6.3 percent.

However, the total number of unemployed was 9,000 more than in March a year ago.

The reference date for the current survey was March 11th.

"The signs point to a cautious recovery: Despite the ongoing lockdown, the seasonal spring recovery on the labor market is evident in the increasing demand for workers and the willingness of many companies to hire," said Markus Behrens, Managing Director of the regional office for Saxony-Anhalt-Thuringia.

There is movement in the labor market, especially in outdoor professions, for example in construction, agriculture or horticulture.

With a view to the pandemic, Behrens also emphasized: "The instrument of short-time work remains an anchor of stability for the labor market and secures the spring recovery."

In March, the companies put 600 advertisements on short-time work for 6,800 employees.

In February there were more than 1,500 advertisements for 14,100 employees.

The extent to which the requested short-time work has actually been implemented can only be determined after a few months.

For industries such as retail, hospitality and the event or tourism industry, which are particularly affected by closings and restrictions in the pandemic, risks remain, as Behrens said.

"Whether and to what extent further jobs will be lost there due to bankruptcies or plant closures cannot be determined at the moment."

The continuing increase in the number of long-term unemployed is also problematic - also a consequence of the Corona crisis, according to the experts.

In March, the number of women and men who were unemployed for more than a year rose by almost 600 to 25,200. That is 7,500 more than in March 2020.

The DGB Hessen-Thüringen referred to another problem: Unemployment among under 25-year-olds in Thuringia rose by 15.9 percent to 6069 people compared to March 2020 and the unemployment rate in this age group rose to 7 percent.

According to the trade union federation, companies would be more reluctant to hire in the crisis.

For young people who have completed their training, the risk of not being taken on increases.

Young professionals would have an increased risk that fixed-term employment contracts would not be extended.

"We need binding takeover regulations for everyone," demanded Sandro Witt, deputy chairman of the DGB Hessen-Thuringia.

Nationwide, the number of unemployed fell by 77,000 to 2.827 million in March compared to February.

The unemployment rate was 6.2 percent.
