Neuenbürg / Berlin (dpa) - With a new law, the federal government wants to prevent the dispatch of prescription-only veterinary drugs.

Veterinarians see this as a threat to the treatment of more exotic pets, for which there are often only a few experts.

The regulations would have a "serious" effect on the therapy of millions of aquatic animals and other rare species, according to a letter from fish veterinarian Sandra Lechleiter from Neuenbürg near Pforzheim and colleagues to the federal government, which is available to the German press agency.

The background to this is that there are often few specialists - for example for ornamental fish - among the veterinarians who then travel long distances to see patients.

Medicines are then sent by post so that neither the doctor nor the owner have to take such routes again after laboratory tests and diagnosis.

The Federal Association of Veterinarians, the Federal Association of Practicing Veterinarians and the Federal Association of Civil Service Veterinarians also recommended in joint comments on the bill of the law that “the veterinarian should continue to allow the dispatch of pharmaceuticals in this special case”.

However, it is only one of several points of criticism;

There is talk of numerous ambiguities and errors.

However, the three-week period allowed for comments was too short.

In general, however, the associations refuse to separate veterinary drug regulations from the Medicines Act and to create their own Veterinary Medicines Act.

According to the EU regulation, mail order sales of prescription veterinary drugs are to be prohibited from the end of January 2022, said a spokeswoman for the Federal Ministry of Agriculture.

"The reason for this is the problem of the widespread illegal sale of veterinary drugs in the Internet trade, which poses a threat to human and animal health."

The federal associations and the federal veterinary association even expressly support the argument.

The federal cabinet approved the bill on March 24th.
