Berlin (dpa / bb) - For the Passover festival, the two large Christian churches in Berlin congratulated the Jewish community and reminded them of their own role in hostility, threats and attacks against Jews.

"Instead of standing by your side and defending your rights, the churches themselves have stoked prejudice and hatred," said a letter from Evangelical Regional Bishop Christian Stäblein and Catholic Archbishop Heiner Koch to communities, Jewish institutions and individuals on Wednesday.

"In keeping with the Passover tradition, a story of liberation from bondage, we do not want to tolerate any oppression, fear or restriction of freedom," explained Stäblein and Koch.

"Today and in the future, we want to stand by your side as brothers and sisters in faith and with all determination to oppose all anti-Semitism and racism that are spreading anew in a terrifying way."

With the multi-day Passover festival, which lasts until Sunday, the Jews remember their departure from Egypt.
