SVT meets in the program "That's how I live" 12-year-old swimmer Max in Umeå.

He has changed his gender identity and would like to compete in swimming trunks.

But since he competes as a girl, his biological sex, he has been told that he must wear a swimsuit according to the rules of the swimming association.

But when SVT Nyheter seeks the head of the federation at Swedish Swimming Sports, we get other offers.

- If you compete as a girl, you can choose to wear swimming trunks.

However, a guy can not compete in a swimsuit at present.

There is a rule that says that the swimming trunks should end below the navel, says Mikael Jansson who is the head of the federation at Svensk Simidrott.

Open to interpretation

At the same time, the attire must not be inappropriate according to the regulations - a sentence that opens up for interpretation.

- In the end, it is the competition leader who decides what is inappropriate clothing.

But I have a hard time seeing that it would be inappropriate when we talk about children's sports, says Mikael Jansson.

Umeå Simsällskap's sports director thinks that it is wrong that it should be up to a competition leader to assess what is ok or not when it comes to children.

"Everyone should be allowed to participate"

The fact that there are rules for clothing has to do with water resistance, among other things.

According to Mikael Jansson, the swimming association is working to review the competition rules for children and young people in general.

How to look at gender is included in that process.

- This is not just about clothes but about inclusion, that everyone should be allowed to participate, says Mikael Jansson.
