Halle (dpa / sa) - Saxony-Anhalt's economy shrank in the past year.

The gross domestic product (GDP), the overall economic output of the region, fell by 3.9 percent compared to the previous year, adjusted for price, as the State Statistical Office announced on Tuesday in Halle.

In the previous six years, Saxony-Anhalt's economy had grown steadily.

Nevertheless, Saxony-Anhalt is doing relatively well on the national average.

Throughout Germany, price-adjusted GDP fell by 4.9 percent in 2020.

"The economic structure has helped us this time not to be quite as bad as other countries," said the President of the State Statistical Office, Michael Reichelt.

For example, Saxony-Anhalt has a small share of vehicle construction, which has been badly affected by the pandemic, of total value added.

On the other hand, the less severely affected food and feed industry is represented more strongly in Saxony-Anhalt than in the national average.

Another reason was the delayed interventions by the federal states in the fight against pandemics in spring 2020, said Reichelt.

In Saxony-Anhalt, for example, the first corona cases only occurred much later than in Bavaria and North Rhine-Westphalia, for example.

In addition, the state government adopted less strict rules at the time.

The State Statistical Office pointed out that the calculation results for 2019 are preliminary.

They resulted from the joint work of all the state statistical offices in the “National Accounts of the States” working group.
