Dusseldorf (AP) - Marc-André ter Stegen will be instead of captain Manuel Neuer in the third World Cup qualifier of the German national soccer team against North Macedonia in the goal.

This decision was announced by national coach Joachim Löw in Düsseldorf.

Löw did not name any further changes in the starting line-up for the home game this Wednesday (8.45 p.m. / RTL) in Duisburg before the final training session.

"For the most part" he will be back with the team that won against Iceland (3-0) and Romania (1-0).

The battered full-back Robin Gosens could play for Emre Can on the left.

The 26-year-old from Atalanta Bergamo had missed the first two games due to muscular problems.

During the training session in Düsseldorf on Tuesday evening, Löw wanted to see exactly what condition Gosens was in.

At his press conference, Löw left it open as to whether Timo Werner will be allowed to storm from the start this time.

"I haven't made a decision yet," said the national coach.

The goal in the first international game against North Macedonia is of course a victory.

But that will be "a show of strength".

"North Macedonia is no worse than Romania," said the 61-year-old.

As captain instead of Neuer, Ilkay Gündogan will lead the team “if he plays from the start”, as Löw announced.
