Hamburg (dpa / lno) - One year after the start of the pandemic, groups from the spectrum of so-called corona deniers are increasingly coming into the focus of the Hamburg Office for the Protection of the Constitution.

In addition to completely legitimate criticism of government action, parts of the scene reject the democratic state, its representatives and institutions as such, said Interior Senator Andy Grothe (SPD) on Tuesday at the presentation of the Constitutional Protection Report 2020.

Such groups would be classified as suspected cases.

Grothe warned of a new ideological conspiracy, endangering the state, constitutional protection-relevant extremism, which could become a challenge for democracy in the near future.

According to the Senator, the Office for the Protection of the Constitution also noted an increase in the number of right-wing extremists in the city to 380 last year.

This increase resulted for the most part from 40 newly recorded supporters of the extremist "wing" declared as disbanded by the AfD.

With 1270 left-wing extremists - 74 percent of whom are violence-oriented - Hamburg also remains a stronghold of militant left-wing extremism.

In addition, there is a comparatively strong Islamist scene with more than 1,600 supporters.
