Düsseldorf (dpa / lnw) - The number of daycare children with corona infections has tripled in North Rhine-Westphalia within a few weeks, and it has more than doubled for employees in day-care centers.

This is based on current figures from the NRW Family Ministry.

As the ministry announced on Tuesday at the request of the German Press Agency, the state youth welfare offices reported 1,291 children with coronavirus infections on March 25.

Two weeks ago, 428 infected children and 692 infected employees were reported for the month of February.

The number of infections among staff has now risen to 1,048.

The ministry reported that the figures are not conclusive, as cases are still being reported and incorporated continuously and in some cases retrospectively.

For January, 181 corona infections were reported among daycare children and 421 among employees.

According to the information, there are around 10 500 funded day-care centers in NRW in the current kindergarten year 2020/2021.

The youth welfare offices have reported 729,300 places in child day care, of which 660 046 in daycare centers and 69 254 in child day care.

A total of around 168,000 employees are active in child day care.

Despite rising corona numbers, the state government wants to keep the daycare centers open until Easter with a reduced number of hours.

Family Minister Joachim Stamp (FDP) warned two weeks ago in the state parliament against “staging day-care centers as a pandemic driver” and thus fueling fears.
