Mainz (dpa / lrs) - In Rhineland-Palatinate, days off due to mental illnesses reached a new high in 2020, according to an analysis by the DAK health insurance company.

In the Corona year, 278 days of absence per 100 employed DAK insured persons were registered, as the health insurance company announced on Tuesday in Mainz.

This is almost twice as many as in 2010. Depression was "by far" the most important cause of sick leave.

Women in particular were often absent due to mental illness, the DAK announced.

Last year, with 352 per 100 insured persons, they had almost two thirds more days of absence due to mental illness than men.

Overall, an average case of illness lasted 40 days and thus longer than ever before, as the DAK announced.

“The corona pandemic is a burden that hardly anyone will pass by.

The changed everyday structures represent an enormous challenge, especially for people with previous mental illnesses, ”said the head of the DAK state representative in Rhineland-Palatinate, Michael Hübner.
