Berlin (dpa) - Former world champion Sami Khedira was able to train again with the Hertha BSC team at the start of the derby preparation.

The 33-year-old midfielder suffered a torn calf in the fourth game after his move to Berlin back to the Bundesliga at the end of February and has been absent since then.

"It looks neat," said Hertha coach Pal Dardai after the practice session on Tuesday.

However, one still has to wait to talk about planning and deployment opportunities.

Because at the beginning of the week there was only a short fitness session and a mixture of futsal and soccer tennis on the exercise program.

From Wednesday the “really intensive work” will come before the Berlin derby in the Bundesliga at 1. FC Union.

"We have to see how his body reacts, then we'll see," said Dardai.

As a member of the winning team at the casual small field tournament, ex-national player Khedira was able to get at least some initial security.

The coach reported that he “made a good impression”.

Even after the most recent 3-0 win against Bayer Leverkusen, Hertha is still in the middle of the relegation battle in 14th place with just one point ahead of the relegation place.

Dardai therefore only classifies the special rivalry in the city duel, which will take place on Sunday (6 p.m.) without fans due to the currently increasing number of corona infections.

“It's a derby now.

But for us at the moment every game is a derby, ”said the Hungarian.

The mood in the team is good, added Dardai: "When you go to the derby with team spirit, I have a good feeling."
