Munich (dpa / lby) - The officers of the Bavarian police intervened 1,784 times in incidents in public transport in the past year.

This was announced by Bavaria's Interior Minister Joachim Herrmann on Tuesday in Munich.

From the point of view of the CSU politician, "the visible police presence was of great value for the feeling of security of the passengers and the accompanying staff."

The number of incidents of intervention fell by around a quarter - mainly because fewer people were traveling by bus and train due to the corona pandemic.

In Herrmann's assessment, especially after the introduction of mandatory masks on public transport, it was mostly the mere presence of uniformed police officers that resulted in passengers complying with the rules.

Since 2010, officials of the state and federal police in Bavaria have been able to use all local public transport free of charge - not only on duty, but also, for example, on the way to work and home.

If necessary, they intervene and ensure safety.

The background to this was the tragic death of Dominik Brunner, who was beaten to death by two young men at the Solln S-Bahn station in Munich in 2009 after standing protectively in front of a group of schoolchildren.
