Schwerin (dpa / mv) - For the further construction of the cruise ship Global 1 at the shipyard in Wismar, the Asian parent company Genting Hong Kong should again be able to access a security account pledged by it.

As Minister of Economic Affairs Harry Glawe (CDU) announced on Tuesday after the cabinet meeting in Schwerin, 35 million euros are to be withdrawn from the so-called lockbox.

The government has given the green light for the short-term bridging aid to prevent an impending construction freeze.

"Among other things, this will ensure the shipyards' liquidity and, for example, outstanding invoices from suppliers can be paid," explained Glawe.

According to his information, the approval of two thirds of the 17 banks and loan guarantees such as the state and federal government represented in the shipyard consortium is required for the release of the security deposit.

It is private capital that Genting has paid in as security for the construction of ships.

The ship Global 1, which will be one of the largest cruise liners in the world with a length of around 340 meters and up to 9500 passengers, is awaiting completion in Wismar.

The multi-group Genting took over MV Werften in 2016 to build cruise ships for their own needs.

But with the corona-related interruption of cruise shipping at the beginning of 2020, one of the most important sources of income collapsed, with dramatic consequences for MV Werften.

Most of the 3,000 employees have been on short-time work for a year, 1,200 of them are threatened with dismissal.

The state government is already guaranteeing loans in the millions and is trying to bring MV Werften under the protective umbrella of the federal government's economic stabilization fund.

The prerequisite for this is that Genting can continue shipbuilding in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.

The report required for this has been announced several times, but is not yet available.

According to reports, additional loan assistance of up to 400 million euros is required to ensure the continued existence of the shipyards in Wismar, Rostock and Stralsund.

In the previous week, the state parliament passed a reserve resolution for the granting of a state loan of up to 44 million euros.

The money should flow in April if Genting's funds are insufficient, it said.
