Berlin (dpa) - The successful South Korean boy band BTS has openly spoken out against racism against people of Asian origin.

“What is happening right now cannot be separated from our identity as Asians,” the band wrote in a post on Twitter, which they published in Korean and English.

They are obviously referring to the incident in and around Atlanta in the US state of Georgia, in which eight people were shot in three massage parlors.

Most of the fatalities were of Asian origin.

The band also reports on their own experiences of racism: “We remember moments when we Asians were discriminated against.

We have endured swearwords for no reason and were ridiculed for our looks.

We were even asked why Asians speak in English. "

However, their experiences are insignificant compared to the events of the last few weeks.

“You, me and we all have the right to be respected,” they concluded their appeal using the hashtag #StopAsianHate.

BTS is one of the most successful bands in the K-Pop genre, which is mostly sung in Korean.

Most recently, they also released songs in English.

This means that they are also receiving increasing attention worldwide.

At the end of 2020, they made it to number 1 on the US charts.
