Munich / Stuttgart (dpa) - The car manufacturers BMW and Daimler are participating in the petroleum company BP in their Charge Now e-car charging service.

The three companies announced on Tuesday that BP will become the third partner with a third of the shares in the Charge Now umbrella company DCS.

They agreed not to disclose the purchase price and the terms of the transaction.

The Charge-Now charging network now comprises 228,000 charging points in 32 countries.

The inclusion of BP's charging network would add 8,700 charging points in Europe.

BP plans to set up 500 ultra-fast charging points at Aral filling stations in Germany by the end of this year and expand its global network of public charging points to more than 70,000 by 2030.

Daimler manager Stephan Unger said: "The large network of filling stations operated by BP and Aral offers ideal conditions for expanding the charging infrastructure - exactly where electric vehicle customers need and expect it."

He sees great potential in the combination of tank and charging solutions for plug-in hybrids.

BMW manager Rainer Feurer explained that an adequate network of charging options is the key to wider acceptance of e-cars.

BP manager Richard Bartlett said: "It also gives us access to a much larger customer base and ultimately increases the utilization of our network."
