A play adapted from the series "Game of Thrones" is in preparation for 2023, with the collaboration of the father of the literary saga George RR Martin, announced Tuesday the production while the television projects abound around this cult universe.

The play will take place "during a pivotal moment in the literary series," said the team, led by theater producers Simon Painter, Tim Lawson and Jonathan Sanford, who set up the magic review in 2014. "The Illusionists" on Broadway.

That defining moment in the saga is the Harrenhal Tournament, which takes place roughly 17 years before the first season of the HBO cable television series.

"Few of them imagined the carnage to come when the well-born and commoner gathered in Harrenhal to watch the kingdom's best knights fight in a grand tournament," said George RR Martin, quoted in the statement.

Will appear in the play "many of the most famous characters" of the literary saga and the blockbuster series, spread over 8 seasons, broadcast from 2011 to 2019.

The play will be written by British playwright Duncan Macmillan, already author of adaptations of the novels "1984" by George Orwell and "City of Glass" by Paul Auster.

"Our dream is to bring Westeros (an imaginary place where 'Game of Thrones' takes place) to Broadway, the West End (London theater district) and Australia ... and later to a stage near you" said George RR Martin, who says he started working on the project before the coronavirus pandemic.

Almost two years after the end of the television series, many projects are underway around the universe of "Game of Thrones".

Among them are "House of the Dragon", a series taking place before "Game of Thrones", produced by HBO and expected in 2022.

George Martin is also involved in projects related to other of his books, including "Les Rois des sables" ("Sandkings"), for Netflix.

This multiplication of projects makes fans of the "Iron Throne" fear that the 72-year-old author will not be able to complete his literary cycle, already overtaken by the television series.

It's been almost ten years since the last volume of the saga, "A Dance with Dragons", was published.
