Emden (dpa / lni) - precision work to the centimeter: a component weighing around 1,600 tons for a deep-sea salmon farm in Norway has passed the large sea lock in Emden.
Floating on a pontoon, two tugs maneuvered the 40 by 40 meter wide and 25 meter high steel half-ring piece by piece into the lock chamber on Tuesday.
Dozens of onlookers watched the smuggling in bright sunshine.
In the coming days, a deep-sea tug will bring the steel colossus to the Norwegian coast, and then another half-ring will follow in a few weeks.
Both put together form the framework for the deep-sea salmon farm.
The client for the constructions is the salmon producer Norway Royal Salmon.
A total of four half rings for two systems have been ordered from Emden Werft Fosen Yard, a successor to Nordseewerke.
In operation, only the top ring will protrude from the water.
Nets are to be attached under the structure to a depth of around 60 meters, in which around 600,000 salmon will then swim.
In contrast to the previous practice, aquaculture should not be used in Norwegian fjords, but on the high seas.
Offshore fish farms are seen as a way to expand the production of edible fish around the world.
On the high seas, the pollution caused by feed and excrement residues, which is a problem in fish farming in bays or coastal waters, is avoided.
For this, the structures of the salmon cages have to withstand wind and waves in arctic waters.
They are therefore built thicker-walled.

Salmon farm construction is a new business area for Fosen Yard - but at the same time a lighthouse project.
"For us this has a very great future value," said the managing director of Fosen Yard Emden, Carsten Stellamanns.
The shipyard wants to continue to use the knowledge gained for building the prototypes in the future.
"We're trying to get comparable orders," said Stellamanns.
According to its own information, the shipyard is the only one in Europe that can now point to experience in the construction of such offshore salmon farms.
According to Stellamanns, the order volume for the two salmon farms is in the mid double-digit million range.
