Berlin (dpa / bb) - At the start of the FFP2 mask requirement on Wednesday in Berlin, the Senate wants to equip the needy with the more expensive masks.

A total of 1.6 million masks are to be distributed free of charge to people with low incomes, the homeless and refugees, as the Senate Department for Integration, Labor and Social Affairs announced on Tuesday.

The masks are to be distributed in facilities in the districts, the homeless assistance and in facilities of the State Office for Refugee Affairs (LAF).

According to the Senate Administration, more than 600,000 residents of the capital are entitled to the free masks.

In addition to the holders of the “Berlinpass”, this also includes Bafög recipients and trainees who receive the training allowance.

The Senate had tightened the previously applicable obligation to wear a surgical mask or an FFP2 mask indoors and in public transport due to the high number of corona infections.

The FFP2 mask requirement will apply in all interior spaces beyond your own living quarters from Wednesday.

In the social media there was previously criticism of the stricter mask requirement - for example because of the higher acquisition costs for protective masks.
