The President of the Transitional Sovereignty Council in Sudan, Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan, called on the United States and the European Union to contribute to reaching an agreement on the Renaissance Dam file.

This came during Al-Burhan's meeting in Khartoum, the US envoy for peace in Sudan, Donald Booth, and the European Union’s envoy, Robert Vandall.

The Sudanese News Agency said that the meeting discussed differences between Sudan, Egypt and Ethiopia regarding the Renaissance Dam, and developments on Sudan's borders with Ethiopia. And secure its dams, and Egypt has its water rights.

Al-Jazeera correspondent in Khartoum, Al-Taher Al-Marrdi, said that there is a readiness by the United States and the European Union to mediate the Renaissance Dam crisis, through broad lines that are reflected in the need to reach a diplomatic solution that guarantees the rights of Ethiopia, Sudan and Egypt.

The correspondent added that the mediation will be achieved if Ethiopia agrees to the participation of the American and European sides, while Addis Ababa insists on the mediation of the African Union exclusively, which stalled the negotiations on the dam.

Secret talks

The Al-Jazeera correspondent in Khartoum stated that the US and European envoys held secret talks today with the Sudanese Ministry of Irrigation on the technical aspects of the Renaissance Dam negotiations.

Last month, Sudan proposed quadripartite mediation consisting of the United Nations, the African Union, the European Union and the United States of America to resolve the dispute over the dam, which was supported by Cairo and rejected by Addis Ababa.

Sudan insists on the necessity of reaching an agreement between the parties concerned before the second filling of the Renaissance Dam, especially as it represents 3 times the amount of the first filling (the second filling amount is estimated at 13 billion cubic meters), which will lead to harm to the Sudanese, as half of the country's population depends on the flow of the Blue Nile waters. .

Sudan announced last January that Ethiopia's implementation of the second phase of the dam filling process without an agreement would threaten the lives of 20 million Sudanese.

Ethiopian insistence

On the other hand, Ethiopia stresses that the second filling of the Renaissance Dam will not cause harm to Egypt or Sudan, confirming its right to use the dam facility to meet its electricity needs.

In a related context, the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that it is necessary to reach an agreement regarding the mobilization and operation of the Ethiopian dam as soon as possible, and before Ethiopia embarks on the implementation of the second phase of the filling of the dam.

Ambassador Hamdi Loza, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Egypt, said that this agreement is necessary to ensure that Egypt and Sudan are not negatively affected by the mobilization process.

The Egyptian Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation, Mohamed Abdel Ati, the US envoy to Sudan, and the European Union envoy met during their stay in Cairo to discuss ways to re-launch the Renaissance Dam negotiations.

It is noteworthy that Egypt depends 97% for drinking and irrigation water on the Nile water.
