Mainz (dpa / lrs) - In view of the corona pandemic, the need for information from authorities is changing - the extent to which public bodies are fulfilling their obligations, the State Commissioner for Data Protection and Freedom of Information (LfDI), Dieter Kugelmann, this Tuesday (11.00 a.m.) Clock).

Under the title "Best of Freedom of Information - Transparency in Corona Times", Kugelmann presents complaints, inquiries and current topics in which the LfDI has been active in the past year with a view to freedom of information.

The number of questions or complaints about freedom of information rose from 180 to 190 in 2019. Around half of the cases come from citizens who have been denied the required information from the authorities.

The other half are inquiries from authorities on how to deal with inquiries from citizens.

The main contact person in both cases is the municipal administration.

The times when authorities could hide behind a reference to the “official secret” will be over with the State Transparency Act that came into force in 2016 at the latest.

The law grants an individual right to information access upon request and also obliges the Rhineland-Palatinate state authorities to provide the existing data on an Internet platform of their own accord.

This includes, for example, resolutions by the state government, geodata, reports and studies.
