Halle (dpa / sa) - A rubber for car tires that is supposed to save gasoline is among the winners of this year's Hugo Junkers Prize for Research and Innovation.

State Secretary for Economic Affairs Jürgen Ude honored the developers from the Fraunhofer Institute in Halle on Monday in an online award ceremony in the applied research category.

The synthetic rubber has a similar abrasion, but a lower rolling resistance than natural rubber.

That saves energy while driving.

The Fraunhofer Institute in Magdeburg won first prize in the most innovative product development category for a new scan system for the logistics industry.

3D scanners on pillars automatically determine the volume of the freight that is driven past them.

The first prize in the basic research category went to the Medical Faculty of Otto von Guericke University Magdeburg for the development of a biomarker.

This should help to better recognize infections in prostheses.

The Faculty of Computer Science at the university in the state capital also won a special prize for a method for clearing up locations for security forces.

The system can generate multidimensional models of the surroundings of buildings in real time.

The award ceremony took place digitally because of the corona virus.

Because of the pandemic, Ude took over the award of the prizes, endowed with a total of 80,000 euros, in place of the patron, Minister of Economics Armin Willingmann (SPD).

Shortly before, the minister had gone into quarantine after a warning from the Corona app.

"The development of innovations is the basis for more added value and thus also for new, high-quality jobs with us in Saxony-Anhalt," said Willingmann in advance.

The winners showed how innovative Saxony-Anhalt is already today.
