Sweden hopes to become a world leader in green fossil-free steel, the question then is whether nuclear power is green enough.

Carl-Erik Lagercrantz is behind the 25 billion investment in H2 Greensteel - a new fossil-free steelworks in Boden.

- We chose Sweden because there is a lot of renewables in the energy mix, and electricity has a good price.

I'm not a big proponent of nuclear power, I think it's easier to say 'green steel' if you only have sun, wind and water.

Prioritizes renewables

Recent investments in producing iron and steel with electricity and hydrogen instead of coal have meant that Sweden's electricity needs can increase by 50 percent.

Both M, KD and the Liberals are now talking about more and new nuclear power in Sweden.

But several of the companies that make the investments have a stated ambition to use only renewable energy - not nuclear power.

The truck manufacturer Scania is one of the investors behind H2 Greensteel.

They want to remove the climate emissions from the exhaust pipe but also the emissions during production, where the steel in the largest trucks can give 20-30 tons of emissions.

Purchasing manager Anders Williamsson thinks it is better if the electricity comes from "renewable energy":

- Yes, I absolutely think so.

We live in a country that has chosen not to expand and renew nuclear power.

Starting such a process has a long lead time, and I personally believe that renewable energy is what we should prioritize.

Giant energy demand

The largest investments come from SSAB and LKAB, which together with Vattenfall created the Hybrit project.

In the long run, the companies will eliminate all emissions from both iron and steel production.

With hydrogen and fossil-free electricity.

LKAB talks about future needs for 55 TWh of electricity.

Hybrit's commercial also talks about "renewable electricity".

Niklas Johansson, communications director at LKAB, tells SVT that wind power has a more competitive price than nuclear power.

And the problems with wind power when it is not blowing become less when you make hydrogen, which can be stored.

- We want fossil-free electricity - which nuclear power certainly is - but we think we can get paid more if we have renewable energy.
