It was at the beginning of 2020 when the pandemic took off that Borås municipality urgently bought protective coats for the care staff in the municipality.

A year later, more than a million unused protective coats are in the municipality's warehouse - and demand has fallen to a few thousand a week.

- It is obviously better to have too much than too little.

Then you should of course make sure that it is not too much, because it is a lot of money, says Jonas Alm, crisis preparedness coordinator in the municipality.

One problem is that there are best-before dates on the gowns.

According to Jonas Alm, the coats will not be able to be used after October 2022. However, he believes that until then it has been possible to sell the coats, or use them in other activities.

Stock left

The cost of the protective equipment is tens of millions of kronor according to Borås newspaper.

However, it will not end up with the municipal residents but with the state, as protective equipment is counted as a national issue.

- It may be that we have a stock left when the expiration date has expired, but then we can still use the coats in other activities, says Jonas Alm.
