A woman of Salvadoran origin died on Saturday afternoon after being subdued by police in Tulum, a resort in the Mexican Caribbean frequented by international tourists, local authorities reported this Sunday.

In the images recorded this Saturday, but released this Sunday, one of the four agents of the Municipal Public Security Directorate of Tulum

suffocates the anonymous woman with her knee, who only manages to express a groan

next to a patrol in broad sunlight day.

The woman is heard complaining when being subdued by the police

and in another video she is already seen motionless before the eyes of the uniformed men.

After the controversy in networks, where

the phrase "they killed her

"

became viral

, the State Attorney General's Office (FGE) of Quintana Roo initiated an investigation into the incident, although it did not mention whether the police were detained or the reason for the subjection of the woman unidentified.

Later, the woman was identified as

Victoria Esperanza Salazar

, originally from El Salvador.

The agency added that forensic experts seek to identify the cause of death, while

municipal police are being investigated

for what happened.

According to reports in the Mexican press, the woman was detained because residents had denounced her for public disorder.

Mexican citizens, activists and government officials expressed outrage this Sunday after seeing a video, circulating on social networks, in which

four

municipal

police officers

from Tulum, a tourist site in the southeast, allegedly killed a woman by putting her on the floor.

"The government of El Salvador, through the Ministry of Foreign Relations, expresses its deepest condolences to the relatives of the compatriot Victoria Esperanza Salazar Arriaza, who, as the media has announced,

was murdered in Tulum

," the government said. Salvadoran in a statement.

For his part, the president of that country, Nayib Bukele, called for those responsible to be punished.

"I am sure that the Mexican government will apply the full weight of the law to those responsible. We are brother peoples, there are bad people everywhere, let's not forget that," said the president on Twitter.

"My condolences to Victoria's family, especially her two daughters, to whom we will give all possible help," he added.

In a statement, the Quintana Roo Human Rights Commission said it filed an ex officio complaint against Tulum's public security agents for "violations of the human right to life."

He added that although the corresponding investigation has yet to be carried out, "any deprivation of life is regrettable and reprehensible, especially when it comes to people who are constitutionally obliged to respect, guarantee, protect and promote human rights."

Police abuse of women

This is not the first case of police abuse against women in Quintana Roo, where last November police officers fired on a feminist contingent protesting against the impunity for the femicide of Alexis, a 20-year-old girl.

The police violence culminated in the separation from office of the state secretary of Public Security, Alberto Capella, and the director of the municipality's police, Eduardo Santamaría.

Today, the Ministry of the Interior (Segob) of the federal government joined the demands for justice for the death of the woman in Tulum.

Mexico is experiencing growing feminist demonstrations because more than 10 women are murdered a day in the country, according to UN Women.

Tulum, located in the southeast of Mexico, is a town near the resort of Cancun that usually receives international tourists for its beaches with turquoise waters and white sand.
