Limburg (dpa / lhe) - In Limburg, the incumbent town hall chief Marius Hahn won the runoff election for the mayor's office.

In the polls on Sunday, the 49-year-old won 53.93 percent of the votes and thus prevailed against his challenger, the 51-year-old senior director of studies, Stefan Laux.

For him it is the second term in office in the city on the Lahn.

Both men ran as independent candidates, but Hahn was supported by the SPD and Laux by the CDU.

Almost 27,000 Limburgers were able to put their crosses on Sunday, the turnout was 43.88 percent.

In the first ballot two weeks ago, a total of four candidates ran.

Hahn won the most votes with 44.9 percent and Laux with 40.4 percent.

The other two applicants from the FDP and Greens were eliminated.
