Halberstadt (dpa / sa) - Idiosyncratic portraitist, brisk draftsman and printmaker: Gleimhaus Halberstadt presents its special exhibition about the painter and engraver Ludwig Buchhorn (1770-1856) a year late due to Corona.

Originally planned for the 250th birthday of the artist, who was born in Halberstadt, in spring 2020, the show will now be shown from May 8th to August 8th, announced the Museum of the German Enlightenment.

According to the information, more than 100 exhibits will be exhibited, mostly drawings and graphics.

About 30 come from other museums and private collections in Berlin, Dessau, Magdeburg, Nuremberg and Cologne.

Among other things, Buchhorn made the copper engraving school of the Berlin Art Academy famous, it was said.

A highlight of the exhibition is Buchhorn's family book, which is loaned to the Gleimhaus by the Duchess Anna Amalia Library in Weimar.

The presentation entitled “... a well-known copper engraver” illuminates the three most important places in Buchhorn's life and work: Halberstadt, Dessau and Berlin.

Some of his works can be found in the Gleimhaus graphic collection, and a portrait of the artist is in the museum's "Temple of Friendship".

It consists of 150 portraits of companions of the writer Johann Wilhelm Ludwig Gleim (1719-1803), who worked in Halberstadt during the Enlightenment period and who also died there.

The "Temple of Friendship" is considered to be one of the largest portrait galleries of the German Enlightenment.

In 1862, Gleim's collections were made accessible to the public in his former home.

According to the museum, it is today the largest preserved literary estate of the 18th century at the historical location in the original collection concept.
