Ethiopia: UNHCR appeal to help Eritrean refugees in destroyed camps in Tigray

For the first time since the start of the conflict in Tigray last November, a team from the UN High Commissioner for Refugees was able to visit the Eritrean refugee camps in the north of the Ethiopian region.

The UN agency confirms that two of these camps, Shimelba and Hitsats, have been completely destroyed.

The 20,000 occupants of the two camps were dispersed throughout Ethiopia.

UNHCR must therefore find an urgent solution for thousands of refugees, as Boris Cheshirkov, its spokesperson for East Africa, explains.

What worries us is that there are up to 10,000 refugees scattered across the region with whom we have lost all contact.

[…] There is an urgent need for other places to cope with the influx of refugees, especially since it is soon the rainy season.

UNHCR needs new resources to care for refugees.

The UN organization has only received 44% of the $ 99 million requested for the first six months of 2021.
