Berlin (dpa) - In the race for the Union's candidacy for chancellor, CDU Vice-Chairman Thomas Strobl pleads for North Rhine-Westphalia's Prime Minister Armin Laschet.
"The CDU in Germany would like our federal chairman Armin Laschet to be candidate for chancellor of the Union and in autumn also to become federal chancellor," said the Baden-Württemberg interior minister and state party leader of the "Stuttgarter Zeitung" and the "Stuttgarter Nachrichten" (Saturday).
"From many conversations I got the impression that this is seen in the same way in the CDU Baden-Württemberg and in all other CDU state associations."
Strobl does not see the fact that the Bavarian Prime Minister and CSU leader Markus Söder is more likely to be chancellor in surveys: “The Union does not want to win polls now, but the federal elections in the fall - Armin Laschet, as a man in the middle, is looking for that right up front. "
In view of the difficult situation in the Union, Strobl also appealed to Laschet and Söder to answer the leadership question quickly - “and not much later than Easter”.
Both had agreed to clarify it between Easter and Pentecost.
Laschet had recently stated that the decision could be made «very quickly after Easter».
However, Söder insisted on the previously mentioned period.

Another party vice, Norbert Röttgen, described the situation of the Union as extremely difficult in view of the state election debacles, loss of confidence and negative polls, but warned of time pressure: “As far as the candidate for chancellor is concerned, we shouldn't rush anything.

With a view to his plea, Strobl said: "For the Southwest CDU, which supported Friedrich Merz before the federal party congress and could theoretically look to the neighboring state of Bavaria out of disappointment, this clear majority support for a Union Chancellor candidate Armin Laschet is not entirely a matter of course."
However, the party needs his integrative power, his focus on central issues, his economic expertise and his talent to surround himself with experts and representatives of all party currents.
